The BC Cancer Vancouver Pharmacy renovation transformed the 20-year-old existing pharmacy into a state-of-the-art facility that meets today’s regulatory and clinical standards. More than just an upgrade, this project is about creating a safer, more efficient, and inspiring workplace for BC Cancer Vancouver’s pharmacists while ensuring continued service to patients throughout construction.
The renovation enhances the pharmacy’s core services, supporting inpatient and outpatient medication dispensing, chemotherapy, and IV preparation. To maintain operations, the project was carefully phased, allowing staff to continue their essential work. Upgrades include new specialized rooms for hazardous and biological drug preparation, additional safety cabinets, and a complete reconfiguration of the layout to streamline workflow and ensure safety at every step.
Behind the scenes, advanced mechanical and control systems bring the facility up to the highest standards for cleanroom performance. Upgrades to air quality, temperature control, and security systems create an environment that is safe, stable, and compliant, meeting stringent requirements while improving comfort and efficiency for staff.
Beyond the technical improvements, KRA brought a human-centered approach to the design. The pharmacy’s interior uses a calming palette of light blues and greens to brighten the windowless environment and create a sense of ease. Stainless-steel work surfaces add a crisp, contemporary edge that speaks to the precision of the pharmacy’s work, balancing warmth with functionality.
Thoughtful lighting design completes the transformation. Overhead fixtures introduce geometric patterns and gentle variation, turning a clinical space into one that feels modern, purposeful, and uplifting. The result is a pharmacy that not only meets the highest performance standards but also supports the wellbeing of those who work within it.
