Still Creek Surgical Centre is a purpose‑built ambulatory surgical facility designed to support a wide range of outpatient procedures in Burnaby, BC. The project involved a tenant‑improvement renovation within a commercial office building, transforming the space into a highly functional clinical environment anchored by four state‑of‑the‑art operating rooms. In addition to the ORs, the centre includes clinical office space for consultations and follow‑up care, as well as shared workspaces and meeting rooms that support collaboration, teaching, and research.
The operating suite is organized as a restricted zone with four operating rooms, each equipped to accommodate a broad range of procedures, including orthopedic, gynecological, ENT, general surgery, plastic surgery, and podiatric services.
The Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) area was carefully planned to support efficient and compliant workflows, with clear access to decontamination, assembly, and sterile services rooms to facilitate safe and effective sterilizer maintenance.
Interior design balances the stringent infection control requirements of a surgical facility with a calm, welcoming patient experience. Falkbuilt wall panels at reception introduce warmth while maintaining durability and cleanability, complemented by a rounded reception desk that enhances safety and softens the space. Glazing throughout the facility incorporates privacy film with an organic floral pattern in muted tones, allowing natural light to filter through while maintaining privacy from the commercial building lobby and exterior.
The Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), located within a semi‑restricted zone, includes recovery bays, support spaces, and four patient changing rooms to streamline pre‑ and post‑operative care. A soft, restrained colour palette supports patient comfort and helps reduce stress during post‑operative recovery.
Throughout the facility, KRA prioritized intuitive patient flow and staff safety, ensuring a layout that supports both exceptional care delivery and a positive patient experience. Through careful planning, clear zoning, and a considered interior environment, the Still Creek Surgical Centre supports safe, efficient care delivery while providing a calm and reassuring experience for patients, families, and staff.
