KRA was hired by Vancouver Coastal Health to design a unique state-of-the-art inpatient unit, serving youth between the ages of 13 to 18 across the region that are experiencing serious mental health and/or substance use disorders.

The unit focuses on the stabilization of patients through short stays for an average of 21 days. The design of the space was youth friendly with space for recreation, socializing, and areas where family members can visit with their kids and talk with staff. Additionally, a classroom allows the patients to continue with their schoolwork to normalize their schedules while receiving treatment.

The design of the ten-bed unit reflects input and expertise from many different stakeholders, including clinicians, youth, family, and facility planners. At the onset of the project, KRA held an open-house to engage youth in the design of the new unit. The attendees of the open house provided feedback and suggestions based on the floorplans and inspiration boards provided by KRA.

The result is a facility that is safe, comfortable, and home-like, creating a patient and family-centred environment.
