KRA was retained in the winter of 2020 by Vancouver Coastal Health to design a new Urgent and Primary Care Centre to serve Vancouver’s Northeast area. The project encompassed the interior renovation of an unoccupied shell space located at street level, as well as minor modifications to the exterior façade.

The program for the new UPCC was comprised of the following: minor treatment, exam rooms, stretcher bay, offices, reception and waiting areas, triage assess, and related support and supply rooms. The key planning principles established for the project were operational efficiency, client-centered care, and future flexibility. The final design of the UPCC allows for adaptable flexibility permitting the spaces to be used for more than the function originally proposed or, by low effort, time, and cost, converted to another use.

KRA’s scope for this project also included a comprehensive signage and wayfinding package to align with Vancouver Coastal Health’s existing standard. KRA worked closely with a representative from the First Nations Health Authority and a local Indigenous artist who designed a mural for the new Care Centre. The final space also included a didactic explaining the cultural significance of the artwork.
